2026 0516 Knits 101- Instructor- Carly Givens

Join Carly for a Knits 101 class on May 16th! By the end of class, you will know your specific machine settings for the fabric you bring to class, as well as how to troubleshoot other knit fabrics in the future. We will cover stretch percentage and recovery for knit fabrics and discuss what negative ease means in terms of knit clothing. We will be working on the Luna Tank top by Helen's Closet, which uses binding for the armholes and neck band. A printed large-scale pattern will be provided as long as students sign up by Friday, May 1st.

Assumptions:

• Students already know how to take measurements and read a pattern
• Students will have their own sewing machine with them and know how to operate it.
• the price of the class includes printing of the pattern in AO format and providing it to the students (students must register 2 weeks beforehand to have the pattern printed for them)
• Students must bring their own fabric (Carly can answer questions before class). Keep in mind most local fabric stores do not carry knit, so allow for extra time when ordering your fabric)
• Students will bring thread and needles.

5. What negative ease is and considering it in sewing knit pattern

• A knit fabric (contact us for help) in the yardage necessary for your pattern size, plus a little extra, Helen's Closet Luna Tank 
•  Thread and bobbin to match your fabric.
• Stretch or Jersey needles for your machine. I recommend a variety pack if you are unsure about the size for your fabric, but a standard needle sizing rules do apply to knits (smaller numbers for thinner fabric).
